Getting Started with Essential Oils

Let’s get down to the nitty gritty of the world of essential oils.

You may have heard of them, you may have not.

If you have, chances are you’ve heard many different stories ranging from “snake oils” to cure all’s.

Honestly, I was a skeptic at first. But after witnessing the success my friend had using these oils for several different things I researched them more.

I discovered I can use these in the place of a bunch of the home cleaners I was using that contained harsh chemicals. I had started steering away from store bought chemical cleaners and had been using vinegar when I could.

When your house is in a constant state of smelling like your 13 year old’s feet, it’s time to find an alternative cleaner! Enter essential oils!

What are essential oils?

There are a lot of people out there that aren’t entirely sure what essential oils are or are under the wrong impression of how they are fake. I wanted to cut to the chase and discredit that nonsense.

Oils are a naturally derived substance that come from plants and trees found in nature. If distilled properly, they remain pure and extremely potent. They work WITH your body in several ways.

There are about 40 million-trillion molecules in one single drop of essential oil. I can’t even fathom that amount.

How To Use Essential Oils

There are several ways to use essential oils. You can apply them topically, inhale them, or even ingest them.

Topically

When applied topically, the oil enters your blood stream through your cells and travels to every cell in your body within about 20 minutes.

Diffusing

Diffusing is probably the most popular way to inhale essential oils, though you can very well inhale them directly from the bottle!  When diffused, the molecules spread throughout the room and are inhaled. I love diffusing because the oils can benefit several people at once and makes for a great air freshener.

Internally

SOME oils can even be taken internally. Yep, I take some oils in capsule form on a regular basis. They are full of health benefits and I would love to share my knowledge of essential oils with you.

Now these aren’t magical, all healing little gems. I am not advocating to use them to cure or treat diseases. But they sure do help to support a healthy immune system and we use them for so many more things than just cleaning, like I had originally planned. Stick around on my blog and I’ll be posting about all kinds of neat things I use them for.

Does the brand matter?

YES, absolutely!

I personally prefer Young Living Essential Oils.

I researched several companies before deciding what oil I would trust to be used on my kids. Young Living has a Seed to Seal guarantee that surpasses any other oil companies guarantee on the quality and purity of their oils. Oils can be distilled in more than one way. But, in order to preserve the integrity and quality of the oil Young Living does not chose the short, cheap way. Check out their Seed to Seal guarantee here.

I was lucky enough to be able to visit one of their farms in Mona, UT over the summer and got to witness the distillation process first hand. Let me tell you, it is meticulous and time consuming. But it is an amazing thing that they do there! It was such a great experience for me and my family and I highly recommend it to all of you. When Young Living says their oils are pure, they mean just that.

There is nothing else in that little amber bottle except for the oil itself. No synthetic scents, no water, no fillers, nothing but good old beautiful and powerful essential oils.

Young Living has been around for 24+ years and is the only oil company to own their own farms and let you (yes YOU) visit and watch the distillation process. Some plants grow better in certain locations. Young Living has farms all over the world so that they are getting the very best quality plant to produce oils from. Some of these farms are owned other than by Young Living, but Young Living is awesome and oversees the entire process from “Seed to Seal” at those locations as well.
