Let’s talk about how my typical day goes and then you will see why I wanted to share my love of Peppermint oil with you. I get out of bed when my alarm goes off at 6 I’ve snoozed my alarm until 6:50. I drag my tired butt down the hall to wake up my 3-5 kiddos who are no happier to get up than I am. Then we head downstairs. Hello diffuser! I love you! In goes about 4 drops of peppermint and 2 drops of Orange. (It is my hope that one day Young Living will come up with a timer like a coffee pot so it will automatically start diffusing before I even enter the room! CAN YOU IMAGINE?!?). I diffuse that until we head out the door.
And so the day goes…
I’m a stay at home mom. So, that means I spend 95% of my time in my house (another 3% driving kids to and from school and their activities and the other 2% is spent running errands like grocery shopping). Fun huh? Not all the time. And at home, I spend my time playing with my 3 year old, cleaning, cooking, or playing with my oils. Yeah, I play with them. I experiment with different blends, or make things (see my other posts) with them. It’s fun! So, when I’m not playing with my oils I actually enjoy using them to help me get my chores done. Know what I do with Peppermint oil? I add a few drops to a cotton ball and throw that in my vacuum canister and happily vacuum away. Can you imagine your house smelling like peppermint just because you are vacuuming?! Who wouldn’t want that?
And the day keeps going…
Around 10:30 the baby goes down for her daily nap. Oh, sweet quiet ME time! This is my time to power through these minutes and get stuff done fast. But, I do prioritize my daily work out and get that done during this time as well. I don’t have much time while she’s snoozing away so I have to maximize my work outs. I follow different BeachBody videos (no, I’m not a coach, but if you are interested I can give you the name of mine. She’s AMAZING!) and they are short but INTENSE. They sure can take a toll on your muscles! And I love it. It makes me feel like I’m doing something. But sometimes, it’s just too much for me. When this happens I just add a drop or two of Peppermint to a carrier oil or even my daily lotion and rub that wherever I’m feeling the aftermath of the workout. Because it can help to release tight muscles it is great to use after a workout, or even the next day when you are really feeling the results from the day before. Another great way to use the Peppermint oil for your muscles is by making these bath bombs. Find out how in this post. They are AWESOME!!
Focusing on my health with Peppermint oil
Because I’m focusing on keeping myself healthy I try to drink a lot of water. I’m not a fan of plain water. It’s boring. I add different vitality oils to my water throughout the day (make sure you are NOT using plastic for this, I’ll explain why in another post.) Add a drop of Peppermint vitality oil to your water in a glass cup! Not only does it make the water more enjoyable, but it has properties that are great for freshening your breath when you drink it in water. I enjoy it in my coffee occasionally, too and Donavin put some in his hot chocolate the other day and said it tasted like a chocolate candy cane. YUM! Peppermint oil is great for digestive issues as well so when you are drinking it in your water or coffee or even hot chocolate you are helping support your digestive system.
Making it through the rest of the day
To me, Peppermint is extremely uplifting. I don’t know why, but something about that oil gets me going. It is a great oil for energy. I don’t know about you guys, but honestly, I can’t be the only mom or only person out there who feels like crashing out every day around 2 or 3 pm. Peppermint helps me out of this sleepy time and gives me a boost of energy so I can continue on with my day and not pass out on the sofa watching reruns of Micky Mouse Clubhouse.
To help me out of that mid-day slump, I add a drop to the palm of one hand then rub my hands together, cup my hands over my nose and inhale deeply. Oh sweet Peppermint, how I love you! It wakes my butt up quick! I dare you to try it and not say it opened your eyes right up! HAHA! This is going to be strange to some of you, but Peppermint gives me an almost euphoric feeling. It puts me in a good mood (especially when I use it with Joy). It wakes me up mentally and physically. I don’t know how I could “mom” the way I do without it.
I love the natural cooling effect it has. It kind of tingles when it cools you down. On hot summer days, I love to put a drop on the back of my neck to cool me off. A certain mom I know loves it to help her feel cool during her hot flashes. (see I didn’t mention your name)
What about those “off” days…
Honestly, we don’t feel too shabby around here very often. I attribute that to daily use of Thieves oil which helps support our immune systems. But, occasionally, someone will come down with something. These days the recommendation is to let your body ride out the fever because that is your body’s natural response to illness. The heat the fever brings kills off the yucky stuff. But sometimes the fever just makes you feel horrible and relief is needed. So, I add a drop of peppermint oil to some carrier oil and rub it down the spine of whomever is not feeling well and also put it on the bottoms of their feet. It really helps to cool them off.
These are the main ways we use Peppermint oil around here and you will notice that it is one of the oils we use daily. There are many other uses for this great oil, if you want more suggestions please ask. Peppermint comes in the Premium starter kit that you can get here, or learn more about here.
