The days are getting shorter, the nights longer, the air cooler and people are getting sicker. That’s what happens around this time year. We are used to germs around here. Getting dirty doesn’t bother me. I realize with 5 kids it’s just a part of life. No matter how much you tell them to cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough, wash their hands after using the restrooms, wash their hands before eating, stop biting their nails (I’m talking to you Daegan), etc, the germs are still spread.
They come home from school covered in all the germs they were exposed to during the day. I feel like germs are all over those kids when they get home. That’s why I love my Thieves oil. I thought with the cooler weather approaching and the classmates at school missing more and more days due to being sick that this would be the perfect time to talk about Thieves and tell you how we use it to help stay healthy around here.
Why it is amazing
Thieves is a blend of 5 different essential oils and is specific to Young Living. It has some pretty potent oils in it including Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus Radiata, and Rosemary. If you have never had the pleasure to smell Thieves oil, it is very fragrant. The Clove and Cinnamon oils are very apparent in the aroma. It has a nice spicy scent that is great for the fall/winter months.
There is actually a story behind Thieves oil. Way back in the 15-th century there was a group of thieves who would rob bodies of the dead and dying. In order to stay healthy and not contract the germs from these very ill or dead people they would apply specific fragrances to themselves. All five of these oils are extremely powerful and work amazing together to give your immune system the support it needs. We LOVE Thieves around here.
Thieves all day, every day
I use Thieves on my kids daily. Twice a day I apply Thieves to my children, once in the morning and once before bed. I have rollers for just about everything and Thieves is in a bunch of them. The one I use at night is labeled as my “good night” roller. Along with Thieves it has Lavender, Cedarwood and Peace & Calming Essential oils. It works double duty to help keep the kids healthy and to help them relax and get a better nights sleep (which is also great for immunity). In the morning I use my “school” roller. It contains Thieves, Joy, and Valor so works double duty as well by supporting their healthy immune systems. and helping them feel ready to start the day and conquer their challenges at school.
At the first sign of someone being sick we diffuse Thieves. It’s amazing diffused alone or with other oils. If I diffuse it alone I use about 8 drops in my diffuser. One of my favorite things to diffuse with Thieves is Lemon oil. The smell of those two is one of my favorite scents because it smells so fresh and clean. I love diffusing that blend when I clean.
A “hot” oil
Thieves is considered a “hot” oil, meaning you may feel the heat or a slight burning sensation if used alone so it is highly recommended that you use it with a carrier oil such as coconut oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, etc. I like to use jojoba oil in my roller bottles because I feel it is not as “oily” as others.
D3 knows how hot Thieves oil can be, and that’s my mistake! She had a cut on her finger and I put what I thought was Tea Tree oil on her. A few seconds later she started complaining that it was burning and I thought she was crazy because Tea Tree wouldn’t burn. She asked if I put Thieves on her and I adamantly told her I did NOT put Thieves on her. I showed her the bottle I used, and oops, it was Thieves! Normally, I keep my oils very organized and can probably pull a specific bottle out of my collection with my eyes closed, but apparently the oils were not in their designated spot. I felt horrible, but put some coconut oil on her finger, the burning stopped and all was well again.
My favorite ways to use Thieves
- Add a drop of Thieves to your toothpaste to support healthier gums. My dentist actually noticed a difference in my gums after doing this.
- DIY all purpose cleaner – Fill bucket or sink with hot water. Add 2 tblspns Pure Castile Soap, 1 c. white vinegar, and 10-12 drops Thieves, 5 drops Purification and 5 drops Lemon. Feel free to experiment with this, making sure you keep the Thieves.
- Outdoor annoyances – 2oz glass spray bottle. Fill ½ way with distilled water. Add 10 drops each: Thieves, Tea Tree, Purification, Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, and Cedar Wood. Fill rest of way with witch hazel.
- Immunity – Add 5 drops each Oregano, Thieves, Lemon and Tea Tree to capsule. Fill rest of way with carrier oil.
- Head discomfort – Place one drop of Thieves on your finger and press to the roof of your mouth for about a minute.
- DIY play dough with Thieves oil. Recipe here.
- Add a few drops to your dishwasher to help clean dishes.
- Put a few drops to your laundry machine to help it free of musty odors.
- Add Thieves to baking soda and sprinkle on carpet then vacuum for a great smelling room. Helps to keep your vacuum smelling fresh as well.
Where to get yours
Of course there are many more uses, but these are things I personally do pretty regularly. And you know where to get your Thieves oil… right here in your very own Premium Starter Kit! You can read this post to find out more info on the kit. One of the reasons I got started with these oils is because I wanted to replace the commercial cleaners with the toxic chemicals in them. With Thieves I’ve been successful at doing just that! And if you aren’t too excited about making your own all purpose cleaner, etc, Young Living has things such as Thieves cleaner, hand purifier, wipes, laundry detergent, hand soap, toothpaste and so much more, all of which are made with Thieves oil.
Do you already have Thieves oil? I’d love to hear some of the ways you use Thieves around your home and with your family.
