All About Grapefruit Essential Oil

Grapefruit Essential Oil

I absolutely LOVE grapefruit essential oil. And, honestly when I first got it, I wasn’t so sure it was going to be one of my favorites. When I think of grapefruit I think of a ruby red sweet, tangy, bitter fruit that I eat with a lot of sugar. I wasn’t too sure what all I could do with something like that oil wise.

Grapefruit oil is actually from the peel of the fruit and not the pulpy inside.  This oil very uplifting and energizing, just like many citrus oils are, so it is wonderful diffused with its fresh aromatic scent. It has a fresh scent that makes it a great oil to add to your homemade cleaning products as well.

POPULAR USES

I initially purchased grapefruit oil to add to my combination that I put in a capsule and take daily with Peppermint and Lemon (well that was the plan, but I don’t remember the last time I actually took it) to support a healthy metabolism (NOTE: If you are ingesting essential oils please, please, please make sure you are using an essential oil that has been approved for ingestion… you need a great quality pure essential oil.  The oils I refer to when referring to ingesting are Young Living Vitality Essential oils, So Grapefruit Vitality, Peppermint Vitality, Lemon Vitality, etc). I am the type of person that wants needs to find many uses for one thing. Makes me feel like I’m getting more bang for my buck. So I researched.

Grapefruit Vitality Oil In Water

Did you know grapefruit oil may support a healthy metabolism? Also, grapefruit is a natural diuretic so if you are trying to cleanse your body, grapefruit and grapefruit oil is a wonderful choice. One of the things I love doing with my grapefruit oil now is adding it to my water! Who has problems drinking enough water throughout the day? This girl right here does! I’m not a fan. Well let’s say, I wasn’t a fan. I love drinking water now though. I will add just a drop or two of grapefruit oil and drink all of it in no time. It is so refreshing! If you do add Grapefruit oil to your water or any other citrus oil for that matter, make sure you use a GLASS container. (I love to hand these out as gifts with a little 5ml bottle of oil so I stock up on them here). The citrus oils can eat away at plastic and pull out the nasty chemicals from the plastic. We don’t want that!

Grapefruit Oil for Mood

As I mentioned before grapefruit oil is very uplifting. If you are in a funky mood apply a drop topically to the inside of your wrists, or mix in a roller bottle with other oils of your choice (I recommend 4 drops of each, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, and Valor) and a carrier oil. One of my close friends calls this her “confidence booster” blend.

Grapefruit Sugar Scrub

But one of my absolute FAVORITE things to do with grapefruit oil is to make sugar scrubs. These are so easy to make. I love this because it’s a great way to start the day, showering with the fresh and uplifting scent of grapefruit. This scrub is all natural and so good for your skin without the harsh chemicals found in many body washes. Did you know they are banning those little beads that go in the body scrubs and face scrubs because they are BAD for the environment, yet we constantly put those on our body daily? This is a great example of why I love natural products and love making my own so I can control what goes into them.

A favorite sugar scrub for skin

This grapefruit sugar scrub naturally exfoliates your skin because of the sugar particles. It is also very moisturizing because I make mine with grapeseed oil (you can use coconut oil or other oils of your choice, I just prefer grapeseed oil because it doesn’t leave my skin feeling “oily” after). And a bonus to the grapefruit oil is that grapefruit oil may impede hair growth. Woo-hoo! I have definitely noticed I don’t have to shave as often when I use grapefruit oil in my sugar scrubs.

Here’s my recipe. I hope you try it and let me know what you think (of course you will love it!).

½ C sugar (I use regular granulated white sugar but you can use brown sugar or whatever you prefer)

¼ C grapeseed oil (you can also use coconut oil, avocado oil, etc)

12 drops Grapefruit Essential Oil

Mix it up and store it in a glass mason jar in your shower/bath and use daily. I also love to tie a pretty ribbon around the mason jar full of Grapefruit Sugar Scrub and give it as a gift to teachers and friends 🙂
