Winter time can leave your skin dry and uncomfortable. Stress, climate, sun exposure, along with what we consume can wreak havoc on our skin. Add in the dry winter air and it’s time to give our skin a refresher. DIY Salt scrubs are an amazingly effective, yet gentle, way of exfoliating the dry skin and making your skin look renewed and fresh. Add in the carrier oils that are moisturizing and the essential oils that can help your skin look and feel younger and healthier and you have an amazing skin care combination. One of my favorite DIY salt scrubs combines Himalayan salt, and Epsom salt.
Himalayan Salt
Himalayan salt is minimally processed. Magnesium and potassium are just two of the trace minerals that are found in Himalayan salt. As I’ve mentioned before, what we put on our bodies gets absorbed into our bodies. Using Himalayan salt in your salt scrub is a great way of not only exfoliating your skin, but it also has antibacterial properties and can even absorb dirt and toxins. It can also be soothing to your skin.
Epsom Salt
The other salt I love to use in my DIY salt scrubs Epsom salt. Epsom salt is commonly used in bath salts because its full of magnesium, and sooths irritated skin. Just like Himalayan salt, Epsom salt is great for exfoliating.
I love the combination of these two salts in my DIY salt scrubs. Personally, I feel the Himalayan salts can be a bit rough on your skin if used alone in a scrub, but combining it with the softer, smaller Epsom salt, the carrier oil, and essential oils (and even honey) can leave your skin super soft and moisturized.
Honey
Another optional ingredient I love to use in my DIY salt scrubs is honey. Yep, honey. Pure, raw organic honey. Over the summer we were able to get a lot of honey from a hive in our front yard fence. I’ve been looking for uses for it and this is one that I absolutely love. You don’t want your skin sticky so this recipe only calls for a little. Honey is antibacterial, antiseptic, and moisturizes without leaving your skin oily. It’s a great addition to this DIY salt scrub.
Carrier Oil
Rubbing around a bunch of salt on your skin might not sound like the most skin soothing technique out there. But if you add a gentle carrier oil to your DIY salt scrub, you will be left with silky smooth and moisturized skin. I love to use grapeseed oil in mine, but, depending on your skin type you might opt for fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil or another carrier oil of your choice. You can learn more about different carrier oils here.
Essential Oil
The last ingredient to these DIY salt scrubs is essential oil. The options here are pretty much endless. You can pick your essential oils based on scent, or how they work with your skin. For instance, Frankincense would be great for younger, healthier looking skin. Tea Tree would be great for extra cleansing, Lavender would be an awesome relaxing scrub with skin care benefits. For my most recent DIY salt scrub I opted for just lavender because I wanted the relaxing scent and healthier looking skin. At the end of this post I’ll list out some great essential oil options for you to try in your DIY salt scrubs. If you still need your starter kit of essential oils, you can grab that here.
Easy DIY Salt Scrub Recipe
And now for the fun part. How to make these DIY salt scrubs. They are super easy and make great gifts. Since Christmas is coming up, I plan on making these as Christmas gifts for my kids’ teachers, along with these sugar scrubs, foot soaks, and lip balms. The teachers will be able to pamper themselves over the winter school break.

Here are some of my favorite essential oils to use in DIY Salt Scrubs. You can use these individually or any combination of them: Frankincense, Lavender, Grapefruit, Stress Away, Citrus Fresh, Peppermint, Tea Tree, Geranium, Rose, Jasmine, Lemongrass… The list really is endless, but these are some of my favorites for supporting healthy and younger looking skin.
When I’m giving these as gifts, I love to tie some twine around them, put a label on them, and slide a little wooden spoon between the twine and mason jar. Isn’t this just the cutest little gift? It’s so easy, affordable, and a gift that just about anyone will use and appreciate! And goes so perfect with the sugar scrub, foot soak, and lip balm.
